About Open Upright MRI

Open Upright MRI is unlike any other MRI system - it is the only MRI scanner where there is nothing in front of the patient's face. Our Open Upright MRI scanner offers the most advanced technology currently available to provide clearer images and/or a shorter exam time than most open-sided MRI scanners. In addition, our subspecialized radiologists have worked with the Open Upright MRI technology for the past several years to maximize how images are captured during the exam - resulting in clear and detailed images.

  • Are claustrophobic and can't be imaged in a traditional MRI scanner. The open design of the Open Upright scanner maximizes patient comfort; you can also watch TV during your exam.
  • Are claustrophobic and prefer not to be sedated during an MRI. The open design of the scanner will minimize any anxiety.
  • Have a health condition or body type that prevents you from receiving your MRI lying down in a high-field short scanner (500 lbs. weight capacity).
  • Are in need of a positional or weightbearing study to evaluate your spine or joints for an accurate diagnosis. Your physician may request an upright scan because you can be evaluated sitting, standing, lying down or bending in the position that helps visualize different areas of the anatomy.

About Other Available Scans

Your physician may request that your exam be completed on a high-field, traditional MRI. An ultra high-field 3T MRI scanner is available at the Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital. Open Upright MRI is the only facility in the region to provide you and your doctor access to high-field 3T MRI along with Open Upright MRI scanner technology. There are specific studies where we compare images from the Open Upright with high-field MRI images. These exams are called Hybrid MRI studies. Hybrid studies are performed to ensure your physician receives additional information that may be necessary to properly diagnose and treat you. There is no additional charge for these exams. These services, combined with x-ray capabilities, help ensure patients receive the right exam at the right time.
